RESILIENCE RELAY FEATURED ATHLETE: DUSTIN

Achilles Resilience Relay 2021

DUSTIN BAKER

United States Air Force Staff Sergeant (Retired) Dustin Baker. Achilles met Dustin in 2015. He reached out to participate in the Detroit Marathon and we happened to have another slot for the Marine Corps Marathon the following week, so he joined us for that as well. He has become a beloved member of the team ever since. Dustin was injured 11 years ago and says that finding the sport of handcycling has made a huge impact on his life. “Achilles helped pull me out of my shell and opened a world of athletics I didn’t know existed for veterans with disabilities. The support system for my wife and I has helped us network with other vets that have become lifelong friends.” Dustin has conquered 12 marathons and is becoming faster by the week! He trains many hours a day and says, “My family has been a great strength to me, always supporting my athletic goals. It’s now a nightly conversation on how many miles I went; how many calories I burned; and what workout my coach has planned for the next day.” Dustin works full time and lives in North Carolina with his wonderful wife and two children. He is looking forward to connecting in person on the Relay course with friends who enjoy the sport of handcycling as much as he does. Achilles is delighted to have Dustin in our community, and we can’t wait to see him continue to shine!
