Chapter Milestones: Nashville

As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Achilles International's late founder, Dick Traum, becoming the first person with a prosthetic leg to complete the New York City Marathon, we're highlighting the people, chapters, and milestones that have helped shape the Achilles community around the world.

We asked members of the Achilles Nashville community to reflect on the moments that have defined their chapter, the milestones they've celebrated, and what Achilles means to them. Read Chapter Leader Amy Harris' reflection below.

Amy Harris, Chapter Leader, Achilles Nashville

My Achilles journey began in 2012, when I found an organization that perfectly combined two of my greatest passions: my professional career in special education and pediatric rehabilitation, and my love of running. Even more meaningful was being able to share that experience with my daughter, Lizzy, who has cerebral palsy.

One of my favorite memories is from one of our very first Achilles practices together. Before every workout, a trainer would lead the group through stretching exercises. Lizzy used a walker at the time, and I remember taking that photo (see below) of us just before heading out for our walk. Looking back, it's a beautiful reminder of where our journey began and how far we've come.

Over the years, Achilles Nashville has become a driving force for inclusion in our community. We have worked to show that athletes of all abilities belong on the starting line and that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, confidence, and sense of accomplishment that comes from participating in sport.

What makes me most proud, however, isn't a single race or milestone, it's our people. Every athlete and every guide brings something unique to our chapter. Everyone has their own reason for showing up, and each person gives their all. Together, we've built a welcoming, supportive community where everyone is encouraged, celebrated, and valued.

One of the moments that best reflects our chapter's spirit was our recent travel trip to Dollywood in Tennessee. More than 85 athletes, guides, and family members came together, with participants traveling from Nashville, St. Louis, Virginia, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, and beyond. It was a wonderful reminder that Achilles is so much more than a local running group, it's a family that connects people across chapters and across the country.

The greatest lesson Achilles has taught me is that every goal, no matter how big or small, matters because it matters to the individual. Success looks different for everyone, and our role is to meet people where they are, support their dreams and aspirations, and celebrate every achievement along the way.

That belief continues to guide everything we do. Every workout, every race, and every new athlete who joins our community is another opportunity to show what's possible when people are welcomed, supported, and given the chance to succeed together.
