Remembering Domenic Romano, A Treasured Member of the Achilles Family
It is with profound sadness that Achilles International mourns the passing of our dear friend and treasured colleague, Domenic Silverio Romano. Known affectionately as Dom, he embodied the spirit of Achilles through his unwavering dedication, generosity and the joy he brought to everyone around him.
From tirelessly tuning up handcycles before sunrise and designing eye-catching display tables to raise awareness of adaptive workouts to making sure the snacks were stocked and the cooler always full at events, Dom approached everything he did with humor and heart.
Dom's journey with Achilles began more than ten years ago as an athlete. In 2019, he joined the staff, bringing his passion and firsthand experience to his role as manager of the adaptive cycling program in New York City. He coached countless athletes of all ages, helping them discover confidence, independence and joy on wheels.
His impact extended far beyond Achilles. Dom was a pillar of the adaptive sports community, dedicating his time and talents to rehabilitation centers, including Mount Sinai, New York University and Burke Rehabilitation. He was recently honored by his amputee support group for his remarkable achievements. His commitment to helping others was a reflection of the extraordinary person he was.
Dom brought countless people to the start line, sharing with them the gift of a community that had transformed his own life. Whether helping someone take their first spin or reach a new milestone, he made every athlete feel unstoppable and every teammate feel special.
“In life, if we’re lucky, we come across special individuals who leave us forever changed. Dom influenced the way I see the world and the way I lead. Having known and learned from him has been one of the greatest gifts of my life, and I am a better person for it. Our hearts are with his loved ones and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” says Emily Glasser, President and CEO, Achilles International.
The video below, filmed in 2022, captures the spirit that propels the Achilles community and serves as a testament to Dom's unwavering dedication.
Thank you, Dom, for the laughter, friendship and countless lives you touched. You gave so much of yourself to keep others moving forward. Your impact will be felt for miles to come.
