About Us

Achilles International is a leading adaptive running nonprofit breaking down barriers to the start line for people with disabilities since 1983.

Our Mission

Achilles International transforms the lives of people with disabilities through athletic programs and social connection.

What We Do

Achilles hosts weekly run, walk and wheeling workouts for all abilities and paces in parks around the world, including in our flagship U.S. cities New York, Boston, Chicago, Houston and Washington D.C.

Who We Empower

  • Achilles Kids includes a school-based run to learn program across the U.S. and in-person workouts in select cities.

  • Through our 62 chapters around the world, we host organized weekly workouts with trained volunteer guides and provide access to racing opportunities and adaptive equipment. We also offer triathlon training opportunities.

  • With gratitude for their service, we offer military veterans with disabilities race opportunities and special experiences through our Achilles Freedom Team.

Why Achilles?

Our late founder Dick Traum was the first known amputee to complete a marathon in 1976. He was driven to share that experience with others. We started as a small track club in Central Park for people with disabilities in 1983. Today we’re a movement, building legends every day in parks across the globe. Our name was inspired by the Greek hero and warrior, Achilles. The name is meant to serve as a symbol of finding one’s greatness and strength.

We run, walk or roll to a more inclusive tomorrow. Our signature neon yellow shirt is a beacon of hope and a symbol to all of what’s possible. “Go Achilles!” is our rally cry. Everyone deserves a start line.

“Achilles works tirelessly to make the impossible possible. None of the things I used to dream about, like winning a marathon, would ever be a reality.”
