Chapter Milestones: Ecuador
In 1976, Achilles International’s late founder Dick Traum made history as the first person with a prosthetic leg to complete the New York City Marathon, helping spark a movement that continues to redefine what’s possible for athletes with disabilities around the world.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of that historic finish, we’re celebrating the people, moments and milestones that have shaped Achilles along the way. Today, that movement spans 60+ chapters worldwide, each with its own story to tell.
We asked members of the Achilles Ecuador community to reflect on the moments that have defined their chapter, the milestones they've celebrated, and what Achilles means to them. Read Chapter Leader Byron S. Pozo's reflection below.
Byron S. Pozo, Chapter Leader, Achilles Ecuador
My journey as a guide began before I even knew Achilles existed. As an athlete, I started guiding and supporting a blind individual because I have always loved helping others. Today, I lead Achilles Ecuador with the goal of better serving and supporting our members.
Achilles Ecuador's story dates back to 2002, when a group of military veterans who had experienced amputations due to combat were invited by the Achilles Freedom Team to participate in the New York City Marathon.
It was there that we first met Achilles founder Dick Traum, who suggested establishing a chapter in Ecuador. One special memory from that time was presenting Dick with a hand-carved wooden gift, which he accepted with great joy.
Since then, Achilles has made a major impact in our community. Today, we are widely recognized for bringing a large number of adaptive athletes to some of Ecuador's most prominent races.
One recent example came in June 2026 at the Quito 15K, Ecuador's biggest race. The day before the event, our team picked up our race bibs and gathered for dinner together before taking on the race.
What makes me most proud is having the opportunity to lead by example and positively transform lives through sports.
More than two decades after that first meeting with Dick, Achilles Ecuador continues to bring athletes together, create opportunities to participate in sport and support our members as they pursue their goals.
